Cuento final

Este cuento fue escrito entre Sebastián Bravo, Elvira Zamora, Lidia Beatriz, Jairo Echeverri García, Virgilio Platt, Marcia Ottaviani y la edición del Comité editorial de Cuento Colectivo. ¿Cómo te pareció el resultado? Tu retroalimentación es esencial.

Acababa de terminar su obra maestra, la novela que la llevaría al estrellato, por la cual la reconocerían como se merecía. Las ansias por enviársela a la editorial eran incontrolables. No importó la gran nube negra sobre la ciudad y el par de truenos que ya habían sonado. Agarró su paraguas, metió las páginas argolladas en una bolsa de papel reciclado y tomó su camino. Su plan era empacar las páginas de manera apropiada en la agencia de correo, teniendo en cuenta que no tenía la papelería oportuna en su hogar.

Todavía faltaban unas cuantas cuadras para llegar cuando, como era de esperarse, empezó el diluvio. Tenía un cigarrillo en una mano, el paraguas en el otro, junto con la bolsa y su novela. En medio del afán por llegar rápido a la agencia de correos, la preocupación por no mojarse mucho y las múltiples cosas que cargaba, no notó que su bolsa estaba mucho más liviana.

Apresuró su pasó con ahínco mientras el aguacero que caía la mojaba de pies a cabeza. Quiso resguardar su tesoro, su obra anillada, y cuando puso la bolsa en sus brazos, cayó en cuenta de que ésta se había roto producto de la lluvia. Su estupor fue completo. No sabía si dejarse llevar por la angustia, que la haría volver sobre sus pasos, o llorar ante la pérdida.

Optó por lo primero y en medio de la tormenta agarró fuerza y volteó. Comenzó con  auscultar cada rincón de su camino desandado. A lo lejos pudo observar un bulto que parecía, o así lo creía ella, un libro. Empezó a trotar rauda. Sus zapatos no se adherían bien a la superficie mojada y terminó cayendo de bruces al pavimento, a milímetros de golpearse la cara.

El paraguas también cayó al suelo, porque lo había soltado para protegerse de la caída. Estaba empapada del todo. Tenía las manos algo magulladas y las medias raídas. Levantó la vista y vio su novela a poca distancia abierta e impregnada. Imaginó las palabras deformándose y tiñendo la celulosa de negro, como el rímel que se desprende de las pestañas.

Hizo un esfuerzo por levantarse, con el cuidado necesario para no volver a resbalar. Parecía acongojada y desilusionada. Tomó el paraguas y lo cerró. ¿Para qué quería protegerse del agua si ya estaba hecha un guiñapo? Las lágrimas resbalaban por su cara, camufladas por los gotones que caían desde el cielo. Creyó que aquello era una señal, su obra no debía ser publicada. Era presa del peor de los pesimismos.

Llegó hasta su obra maestra y se agachó frente a ella. Intentando, infructuosamente, secarla. De pronto, quedó protegida del aguacero y ante sus ojos se detuvieron unos zapatos rojos de charol. Levantó la cabeza con suavidad, sorprendida de con quién se encontraba. Era un payaso, con su propio paraguas rojo, el maquillaje corrido y  cara de seriedad. “Señora, no debería estar tirada de esa forma en la mitad de la calle. La va a atropellar un carro” dijo el payaso.

La ayudó a levantarse, acción que se le dificultó debido a que ella se rehusaba a soltar las hojas. Caminaron hasta una panadería que tenía un pequeño techo en la parte de afuera. “¿Qué le sucede señora? ¿Tiene un deseo de muerte o algo parecido?” indagó el payaso mientras cerraba su paraguas y encendía un cigarrillo. “Algo parecido… mi obra maestra, dos años enteros de trabajo… mire lo que es ahora” contestó ella temblando y mientras extendía sus páginas empapadas. El payaso, que no dejaba de fumar, tenía cara de amargura, a pesar de su atuendo y maquillaje gastado.

“¿No tiene una copia en su computador?” preguntó el individuo mientras recibía las hojas. “Suelo escribir a máquina” dijo ella. “¿Quién demonios escribe a máquina en pleno siglo XXI?” inquirió el payaso con tono gruñón. “Pues yo. Me gusta el sonido que hace mientras oprimo las teclas” contestó ella, un poco alterada por lo directo que era este personaje. “Creo que hay una opción en el computador que permite que las teclas suenen de la misma forma”, contesto él.

“Es el destino que no quiere que publique mi novela” comentó ella, haciendo caso omiso a lo que acababa de decir el desconocido. “Pues sí, algunos lo podrán llamar destino, otros darle la espalda al presente. Si no te gusta el computador, al menos una fotocopia podrías haber sacado” apuntó el payaso antes de tirar su cigarrillo al suelo y apagarlo con su zapato rojo de charol.

A penas éste notó que la mujer estaba a punto de explotar en llanto una vez más, soltó una carcajada que expuso su dentadura amarilla. “No lo tome tan a pecho mi señora. Yo siempre he dicho: si la vida te da la espalda, tienes que agarrarle el trasero. Hasta nunca”, agarró su paraguas y tomó su rumbo, perdiéndose en la oscuridad.

Pasaron un par de minutos y ella decidió hacer lo mismo. En todo el camino, no dejó de pensar en la inverosímil secuencia de acontecimientos que acababa de experimentar. ¿Qué fuerzas intangibles habían hecho que terminara recibiendo lecciones de vida de un payaso? De hecho, que ella supiera, no había ni circos, ni teatros por la zona y faltaba bastante para el día de las brujas. ¿Tal vez un niño de cumpleaños? En ese barrio… no lo creía.

Nunca más viviría un episodio parecido, teniendo en cuenta que después de este, decidió hacer un mayor esfuerzo por mantenerse a la vanguardia de la tecnología y ser precavida con su trabajo. Se decidió a reconstruir su obra con el único recurso que le quedaba, la memoria, y lo logró. De todas formas, el resultado final no fue el mismo. Ahora la novela tenía un toque más de ironía, fantasía y comedia, también el título lo cambió, es el mismo de este cuento.
