Cuento final
Al parecer no era su día, las últimas dos manos habían sido catastróficas. Necesitaba hacer su movida ahora o desangraría de forma lenta. Esperó a que las dos cartas estuvieran sobre la mesa, antes de verlas. Entonces las abrió: ¡Par de aces! Ese último mes, Lucas había jugado más que nunca.
Lo que comenzó con una sesión cada dos semanas con amigos, en la casa de Bengie, se había tornado en una obsesión por las cartas. Ahora jugaba cada vez que podía. En esa ocasión, estaba jugando en la casa del primo de un amigo suyo llamado Ray, con el que hablaba en ocasiones. En realidad al único que conocía en el lugar era a Ray, a los demás no lo los había visto en su vida.
Hasta el momento, los demás jugadores le habían parecido bastante serios. Lucas había intentado aflojar el ambiente haciendo un par de comentarios graciosos, pero estos tipos parecían estar o muy concentrados en su juego o tal vez no tenían ningún sentido del humor. ¿Pero qué importaban en ese momento los demás jugadores asociales cuando tenía un par de aces en su poder?
Lucas dobló sus apuestas antes de que repartieran las tres primeras cartas comunes, el llamado flop. Para su sorpresa, cuatro personas en la mesa igualaron su apuesta. Al parecer había varios con posibles juegos interesantes, pero hasta ese momento, él tenía el mejor. En el flop salió otra A una K y una J.
Tenía ahora un trio de aces, sin embargo, existía la posibilidad de que alguien terminara con una escalera en las siguientes cartas. Por ese motivo, cuando fue su turno, Lucas triplicó las apuestas. El único que la igualó, era el personaje que más le inspiraba miedo a Lucas por su cara de bravucón.
Su nombre era Tulio Juárez. Hace unas semanas, como a esa misma hora, Tulio se encontraba sepultando un cadáver a las afueras de la ciudad que él mismo había asesinado con sus dos manos. A él era alguien que no le gustaba que lo pusieran en ridículo, ni mucho menos que lo timaran. Lo que sucedía, era que cuando Tulio consumía más cocaína de la cuenta, pensaba que todos lo ridiculizaban o lo estaban engañando.
Ese día, sólo había consumido un gramo de coca, lo suficiente para poder jugar poker sin perder la consciencia. Sin embargo, dentro de poco podría inaugurar el segundo gramo, porque en esta mano estaba seguro que se lo llevaría todo. Él tenía un A y una K en su poder… es decir, dos pares hasta el momento. ¡Por supuesto que igualaría la apuesta de ese muchacho con cara de afeminado que había invitado el primo de su amigo Iván! ¡Ni loco iba a desperdiciar esa A K – 47 que le habían repartido! Entonces repartieron la siguiente carta. Otra K.
Ahora ambos jugadores tenían un “full house”, es decir, un trío más un par. Sin embargo el juego de Lucas era más fuerte, porque su trío era de aces. De todas formas, es muy difícil ganarle a un full house en poker y era por eso que Tulio se sentía inmortalizado. Antes de que repartieran la última carta, pidió permiso para una breve ida al baño y en ese instante ingirió lo que quedaba de la coca mientras hablaba consigo mismo frente al espejo: “El juego es tuyo Tulio. Tú eres el patrón aquí”.
Entonces volvió a la mesa, levantó su par de cartas para asegurarse que allí seguían, y dijo las palabras mágicas: “Apuesto todas mis fichas”. A Lucas no le tomó mucho tiempo pensarlo: “Apuesto todo también”. Ambos jugadores destaparon sus cartas. Cuando Tulio vio el juego de su contrincante no lo podía creer: “Maldito tramposo” dijo con rabia. “Sólo con trampa le puedes estar ganando a mi juego. ¿Qué hiciste? A ver, cuéntanos”. Tulio estaba a punto de desenfundar su Colt de 9mm y acabar con la vida del flaco timador que tenía en frente, pero de repente todo se comenzó a mover.
Las fichas se cayeron de la mesa, el candelabro de techo se comenzó a balancear de un lado a otro de forma violenta y la intensidad incrementaba, era un temblor de por lo menos 6 grados. Lucas se escondió al lado del sofá. Tulio, que nunca había vivido un temblor, salió corriendo fuera del apartamento. Todos los jugadores de la mesa se esparcieron.
Hubo desastres ese día en la ciudad debido al temblor. Tulio terminó herido de gravedad después de caerse al intentar bajar las escaleras del edificio. Ray, Lucas y los demás buscaron lugares dónde agacharse y esperar a que pasara el temblor y nada les sucedió, a parte de uno que otro rasguño. Esa noche Lucas llegó a su casa con la certeza de que nunca más volvería a jugar poker y se acostó a dormir sin tener la más remota idea de que si el terremoto hubiera sucedido 10 segundos después, sería un cadáver.
