La lluvia pegaba fuerte en las ventanas y las goteras llenaban la casa de rítmicos e insoportables ruidos. Miranda estaba acostada en su cuarto tapada por una manta de lana de alpaca, vestida con un traje de seda negro mientras esperaba a su esposo. De repente el sonido de las gotas comenzaba a ocasionar en ella un embrujo hipnótico, que la hacía caer poco a poco en un sueño profundo.
De un momento a otro, se encontraba en una de las sillas de un teatro con decoración gótica, entre muchos desconocidos. Entonces una de las luces se encendió en el teatro, iluminando el punto en el escenario específico en donde estaba un jorobado con la cara deformada… el anfitrión de la velada, al parecer. “Sean todos bienvenidos a la peor de sus pesadillas” dijo el jorobado con su micrófono. Un grito agudo se escuchó en el auditorio, el cual ocasionó una risa macabra por parte del anfitrión.
“Son ustedes las almas escogidas para este, el único sueño en el cual ustedes saben que están soñando, sin embargo, no podrán despertar. Sin más preámbulo acerca de las oscuras fuerzas que dirigen este evento mundial, nada más y nada menos que en octubre, el mes de las brujas, basta con decir que sólo volverán a sus vidas mundanas, aquellos que derroten sus peores miedos… aquellos que venzan a su propio subconsciente”.
La deforme criatura fijó sus ojos en Miranda como una daga penetrante. Ella, inmóvil, sólo podía percibir sus manos sudorosas incapaces de tocar sus piernas ya adormecidas. Trató de pensar en otra cosa, siempre le gustó creer que estaba en control de todo. Entonces todo el auditorio se levantó y empezó a acercársele.
Pisada tras pisada, Miranda podía verse llena de miedo, tuvo esa sensación escalofriante al pensar que quizá no despertaría. El escenario se tornó rojo, un rojo tan intenso que la cegó por unos instantes, y cuando trató de recobrar la conciencia, el lugar ya era distinto. Llevaba amarrada a su mano un pequeño baúl plateado bastante viejo y oxidado.
“¿Dónde estoy?” continuaba preguntándose de forma constante mientras intentaba asimilar el entorno que ahora la rodeaba. “¡Miranda!” se escuchó una estrepitosa exclamación desde el otro lado de la oscura bóveda, de inmediato reconoció su voz.
Era la voz de su tío Fernando, el abusivo. Tuvo un fuerte dolor en el pecho al recordar todo ese dolor, sin embargo, ella hace años que no veía a su tío. Desde que su padre y toda la familia se enteró, él se había desaparecido. Estaba, como lo había dicho la criatura, en una pesadilla interminable.
“Despiértate Miranda, esto es un sueño”, se decía. “Miraaandaaa…” la voz de su tío se acercaba cada vez más. Cuando ya estaba a casi unos metros Miranda comenzó a llorar. “Déjame quieta maldito enfermo. No quiero jugar contigo”. Entonces sintió en su hombro derecho la mano. Un nudo se formó en su garganta, secó sus lágrimas y volteó.
Para su alivio, no era su tío, sino un doctor. “Miranda, ven conmigo”, le dijo mientras la halaba de su mano. Miranda desprendió la mano del doctor que le incomodaba y cruzó sus brazos. “Yo lo sigo” dijo. “Como prefieras” dijo el doctor. Cuando estaba en un pasillo más aislado, el doctor se quitó el tapabocas. De hecho era muy joven.
“Miranda, toda tu familia ha muerto en un accidente”. “¿Qué?” preguntó Miranda. “Tu madre y tu hermana murieron en el momento del choque. Hicimos lo que pudimos con tu hermanito, pero las heridas eran severas. Murió hace unos minutos en el quirófano”, dijo el doctor. Miranda empezó a sentir nauseas, de pronto se desplomó en el suelo.
Cuando se despertó, se dio cuenta de que estaba acostada sobre una tabla de madera de más o menos 15 centímetros de ancho, que hacía de puente entre un rascacielos y otro. Sintió, de nuevo, cómo su corazón empezaba a latir de forma violenta, seguido de un dolor en el pecho. “Es sólo un sueño. Nada me va a pasar”, se decía Miranda una y otra vez. “Pero si ya sé que estoy soñando… ¿Por qué demonios no me despierto?”.

Después de caminar unos minutos, encontró lo que era un hueco en la tierra, del tamaño de una tumba. “Entra ahí” dijo el mismo hombre. Miranda comenzó a llorar otra vez. “¿Crees que algo vas a solucionar llorando? ¿Cuántos años tienes ya Miranda?”.
En ese momento Miranda detuvo su llanto. “¿Qué es lo que quieren de mí malditos? ¿Demostrar que soy una cobarde que todavía le tiene miedo a las alturas y a la oscuridad? ¿Que dejo que todos los que conozco me pisoteen una y otra vez? ¿Que tengo un pasado tormentoso que no he podido superar? ¿O que todas las noches un nudo se me forma en la garganta al pensar en mi propia muerte o en la de cualquiera de mis seres queridos?”.
En ese momento Miranda escuchó un sonido metálico, como el de una escopeta. Después, una presión en la parte de atrás de su cráneo. “Chao Miranda…” escuchó, y luego un fuerte disparo”. Cuando despertó, estaba temblando en los brazos de su esposo. “¿Qué te sucede Miranda? Estas sudando” le preguntó su esposo. Miranda estaba agitada, casi no podía respirar. “Pasé la prueba… gracias a dios pasé la prueba”, decía Miranda.

Entonces Miranda lo agarró fuerte por su camisa. “¿Dónde están mi mamá y mi hermana”, preguntó. “Que yo sepa Sandra sigue bien en Italia con sus estudios y tu mamá debe estar en su casa”. ¿Por qué mi amor? ¿Tuviste un mal sueño?”. Miranda abrazó a su esposo con toda su fuerza y le dijo: “Fue muy real, demasiado real, creo que de verdad me salvé”.
