Había elegido caminar por el borde del río porque sabía que con aquella tormenta y las orillas resbalosas, difícilmente se encontraría con alguien, amigo o enemigo. En realidad no le importaba mucho la suerte de su empresa. Se había dejado arrastrar por cierta fatalidad, y por la especie de anestesia moral que lo caracterizaba por aquellos días.
A unos diez o doce metros vio el relumbre de los ojos pálidos de los guaks. No contó más de 3 o 4 pares; entonces no atacarían. No, a menos que hubiera algunos más merodeando entre la niebla que cubría el cañaveral. Los ojos parpadearon y desparecieron. Unos gruñidos y chapoteos cada vez más lejanos le confirmaron que podía seguir su camino, sin echar mano al viejo revólver de su padre.
Tanteó el bolsillo húmedo de su chaqueta, para confirmar que su diario, inofensivo hasta esa misma mañana, seguía allí. En esta dimensión, la ley de la reencarnación era un hecho y los guaks eran la peor de las reencarnaciones, el karma de las almas criminales. Animales repugnantes de más o menos un metro de altura que se comunican a través de chillidos agudos de distintos tonos.
Sus pericias principales son el truco y el engaño. Es común que al verse superados en poder, parezcan ser graciosos, no obstante, si superan a su víctima en tamaño o número, la situación se puede tornar violenta. Al revisar su bolsillo, notó que su diario ya no estaba. Revisó el resto de su chaqueta pero no lo encontró.
“La puta que me parió” gritó a todo pulmón e hizo dos tiros al aire. A unos metros escuchó las risas agudas de los guaks. Y comenzó la persecución…

Corrió tras ellos. De pronto los vio entrar en una cueva. Enseguida pensó que allí dentro podía haber muchos más. Sin embargo, lo más importante era el diario. Encendió su linterna y caminó varios metros. Entonces se encendió una luz y pudo ver la gran cueva en la que estaba, con cerca de 30 guaks.
“Sólo necesito mi diario y tomaré mi camino” dijo, haciendo un gesto con las manos y las cejas. Uno de los guaks hizo, con sus chillidos agudos, una mímica de sus palabras y gestos. Todos los demás guaks riéron. El mismo guak de un momento cambió su cara y puso una agresiva.
Entonces, con la palma de sus grandes manos le pegó en la cara. Enseguida sacó el revolver de su padre y pudo disparar unos tres tiros antes de que se lo arrebataran. Entre todos, a golpes primero y después a mordidas, se lo empezaron a devorar. Antes de perder la vida, pensó en cómo, de alguna forma u otra, él mismo se había llevado a esa situación.
