Dominic estaba sentado en el techo del tren, rodeado de azul y amarillo. Desde ahí sentía el cálido aire con fragancia de hojas secas en su rostro. Desde su punto preciso, alcanzaba a ver como los rieles se iban desvaneciendo, como si el tren se los estuviera tragando. Si intentaba mirar hacia atrás, solo podía ver la magnificencia de esa estructura de metal, pero no era fácil distinguir lo que la velocidad, o la variación de la distancia en función del tiempo, iba dejando en su camino.
Un concierto de voces, cuerdas, tambores y gaitas sonaba en su interior. En el exterior un cielo con nubes gloriosas, el sonido de la fricción del metal, campos, árboles, lagos, aves y el ardor en la piel por los rayos del sol, refrescados por el viento. Si hubiera podido, se hubiera quedado en ese lugar hasta llegar a su destino. Sin embargo, un túnel se aproximaba. No quería perder la cabeza, al menos no literalmente, porque la verdad era que la había perdido hace rato. Decidió entrar de nuevo al espacio reducido al interior del tren.
Se sentó en su lugar, de cojines morados de terciopelo, en donde había dejado su gabardina beige y el libro que estaba leyendo, con el separador de páginas en toda la mitad. En las sillas de adelante, una pareja conversaba desde antes de que él se levantara. No se acordaba de lo que habían conversado antes de forma exacta, pero sí de que le había dado la impresión de que no eran compatibles, pero quién era él para decidir eso.
No obstante, después de algunos minutos en el lugar, recordó el porqué de la impresión. La chica le hablaba al novio con entusiasmo acerca de sus proyectos y novedades, pero éste siempre conseguía cambiar el tema, o abrir una revista en medio de su discurso. Además de esto, cuando era el turno del novio de hablar acerca de sus asuntos, éste demandaba atención completa. La más mínima mirada divergente por parte de su “querida” y una discusión era segura.
La típica relación pasiva- agresiva, pensó, sin ser él un psicólogo. También pensó que si continuaba husmeando en esa conversación, iba a vomitar ahí mismo en el pasillo, ¿o en la cabeza grande del agresivo quizás? Optó por explorar el casino del tren.
Era una larga mesa, con repartidores de cartas en smoking negros, en el centro la ruleta rusa y al final una serie de máquinas de juegos. Dominic se sentía con suerte y quería dejarlo todo al azar, por eso escogió la ruleta rusa. Unas seis personas más apostaban a la ruleta, un eslovaco apellido Steinhart, cuatro daneses que viajaban juntos y una rusa llamada Anja. Cuando llegó su turno, le aposto 10 fichas al rojo, 4 fichas al 7, 5 fichas al 10 y 30 fichas al 4.
Todos los demás en la mesa realizaron sus apuestas. “Cae el 9”, dijo el repartidor, quien se llevó todas las fichas de los números perdedores. Los únicos que le acertaron al 9 fueron Anja y uno de los daneses, sin embargo, era la rusa quien más le había apostado al 9. “Me has traído suerte amigo. Ahora no te puedo dejar ir”, dijo Anja. Su mirada era intensa y penetrante, su presencia era fuerte, Dominic cruzó sus dedos para que la suerte de Anja no cambiara, así fuera a costa de la suya.
“¿Cómo es tu nombre?”
“Me llamo Dominic”
“Dime Dominic, ¿de dónde eres exactamente?”. Esto lo preguntó mientras hacía sus apuestas en la mesa, alternando su mirada entre la mesa y los ojos de Dominic.
“Soy de Nápoles, en Italia”, Dominic aún no apostaba, no podía concentrarse en ambas cosas.
“¿No vas a apostar?”
“Lo dejaré para la siguiente ronda”, dijo mientras la ruleta comenzaba a girar…
