3 a.m. y como es usual en mí, no lograba conciliar el sueño. Me asomé por la ventana de mi habitación y comencé a detallar la fachada del edificio de en frente. Tantas ventanas, tantas historias, sobre todo a las horas en las que todos salen de trabajar. Pero en ese momento todos dormían y no había ni una sola luz prendida. “¡Malditos suertudos! ¿Cuánto daría por estar en su posición? Por allá en el quinto sueño”.
De repente una luz se prendió en el edificio de enfrente, y lograba ver, a lo lejos, la silueta de alguien. Permanecía parado con la mano en la quijada, como si estuviese analizando algo. Decidí rápidamente seguir sus movimientos; a lo mejor me ayudaba a conciliar el sueño.
Ya eran las 3:45 a.m. y la silueta seguía en la misma posición. “¿Qué estará sucediendo?” me pregunté, pero mi duda fue interrumpida por una extraña llamada. Alcé el teléfono y una voz tosca y gruesa me dijo que dejara de observarlo. Me asusté e inmediatamente apagué la luz de la habitación y me escondí detrás de las cortinas verdes.
“Lo siguiente que recuerdo es haber despertado en la cama, doctor. Me resultó extraño porque hacía meses que no lograba descansar, y esa mañana tenía la sensación de haber dormido plácidamente durante horas. Miré el despertador y me di cuenta de que llegaba tarde a la oficina, así que no reparé demasiado en el dibujo”.
“Recapitulemos, Robert. Hace un par de días, intentando vencer al insomnio, decide espiar a alguien del edificio de al lado. Recibe una llamada que lo anima a dejar sus vistas nocturnas, y tras eso, lo siguiente que tenemos es a usted, despertando de un largo sueño, y un boceto que no recuerda haber dibujado sobre el escritorio, ¿correcto?”.
“Así es, doctor. No me di cuenta de que esa horrible escena estaba allí hasta bien entrada la tarde”.
“¿Qué hay de su tratamiento, Robert? ¿Continúa tomando la medicación que le prescribí?”.
Robert vaciló un instante y asintió con la cabeza.
– Bien, hábleme de ese dibujo.

“Usted lo sabe doctor”.
“De todas maneras te voy a recetar estas pastillas para el sueño. No es buena idea que estés trasnochando de esa manera. Además me dices que hay lapsos de tiempo que no recuerdas. No es buena señal”.
“Lo que usted diga, doc”.
