Caminaba por una calle desierta, cuando de repente timbró el teléfono público que estaba a su derecha. Miró hacia atrás para ver si alguien estaba cerca, pero solo el viento daba signos de existencia. Pensó por un momento ignorar el ruido, pero la curiosidad no le dejo continuar. ¿Qué más daba? Seguramente no era nada. Miró de nuevo para asegurarse que nadie le estaba viendo y descolgó la bocina.
Entre miedo y alegría, escucho una voz conocida, era la voz de la mujer que había amado durante sus años de adolescente. La voz era tan dulce como entonces, así que le costó un poco de trabajo prestar atención a las palabras por intentar mantener a la voz hablando.
Una vez pasada la sorpresa, su mente racional le obligó a recapacitar ¿Cómo supo dónde podría localizarlo? La despedida había sido dolorosa y se prometió nunca más buscarla, pero ella lo encontró a él. Se vio a sí mismo y casi no se reconoció, la voz lo hizo evocar a ese adolescente y renovado en su interior se reflejó en su exterior.
Balbuceaba sin concretar una palabra para interrumpirla. La tierra, justo en ese momento, pareció estar poblada de nuevo, y entonces lo supo: no estaba solo. La búsqueda por fin había terminado, pero no pudo evitar sentir nostalgia; familia, amigos, todo había quedado en el pasado y la esperanza de un futuro casi perdido rondaba en su cabeza como un buitre.
La escuchó en silencio, sonriendo, con una sensación agridulce sólo comparable al condenado que come su última cena, encargada para su placer, para recordarle que después ya nada. La escuchó decir cosas que ya conocía por habérselas oído en otras ocasiones y supo cómo continuarían las dulces frases. Dejó la cabina y buscó el coche que había aparcado hacía dos horas.
Subió y se dirigió al precipicio frente al mar que había visto la noche anterior al llegar a la ciudad. Apenas recordaba su voz y el glioblastoma multiforme se la había devuelto, un maldito tumor en el lóbulo temporal en cisura angular, creciendo todos los días, inoperable, presionando y produciendo alucinaciones auditivas. Todavía sonreía cuando se estrelló contra las rocas.
